Electric Car FBT Exemption and EV Novated Leases

An electric car provided through a novated lease is exempt from fringe benefits tax when three conditions meet: it is a battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell car, it was first held and used on or after 1 July 2022, and its price at its first retail sale was below the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles, $91 661 for 2026-27. When it qualifies, the lease payments, charging, insurance, servicing and registration all come out of pre-tax pay with no FBT and no after-tax contribution. On a $62 000 car that removes $12 123 of FBT a year, or $12 400 of after-tax contributions under the usual workaround. For a $110 000 earner on a four-year lease the electric version saves $6 590 a year against buying, where the same car with a petrol engine would save $1 856. Check your car below.

The three conditions, one by one

A zero or low emissions vehicle. FBT law now means a battery electric vehicle or a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, built to carry less than one tonne and fewer than nine passengers. A conventional hybrid that cannot plug in has never qualified. A plug-in hybrid stopped qualifying on 1 April 2025, with a carve-out for leases already running, explained on the PHEV page.

First held and used on or after 1 July 2022. The car must not have been both held and used by anyone before that date. A car ordered in February 2022 and delivered in June 2022 can still qualify if nobody used it before July; a car on the road in May 2022 never will, even after a sale to a new owner.

Under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles. The test is the car's value at its first retail sale, GST included, against the threshold of that financial year. Every later sale must also stay under the threshold. Since 1 July 2025 a fuel-efficient car is one that uses no more than 3.5 L/100 km, which every battery electric car meets.

Thresholds by year of first sale

Financial year of first retail saleFuel-efficient threshold
2026-27$91 661
2025-26 and 2024-25$91 387
2023-24$89 332
2022-23$84 916

The 2026-27 figure was indexed by a factor of 1.003. A model whose drive-away price sits just under the line can cross it with a few options: the value tested includes accessories fitted at the time of sale but not registration, stamp duty or CTP. A $91 000 car with a $1 000 roof rack fitted by the dealer is over the 2026-27 threshold and can never be exempt.

What the exemption is worth on a $62 000 car

Without the exemption the car fringe benefit would be valued at 20% of $62 000, a taxable value of $12 400. Grossed up at 2.0802 and taxed at 47%, that is $12 123 of FBT a year. Nobody actually pays that: providers switch to the employee contribution method, where you hand over $12 400 a year from after-tax pay instead. The exemption removes both, so the whole cost of the car goes through pre-tax pay.

The novated lease calculator runs the same comparison with your own salary, price, term and running costs.

Exempt but reportable: the catch for HELP and the surcharge

An exempt electric car is still a reportable fringe benefit. Your employer reports the taxable value grossed up at 1.8868: $23 396 for this car. You pay no tax on it, but it is added to your income for the HELP repayment, the Medicare levy surcharge, family payments, child support and the private health insurance rebate. In the example, taxable income after packaging is $94 094; with the reportable amount the HELP repayment goes from $3 685 to $7 194 a year. That cost belongs in the comparison if you carry a student debt. The reportable fringe benefits page runs it on your figures.

Charging at home: the 5.47 cents per km rate

Electricity to charge an exempt car is an exempt car expense, but home charging is hard to separate from the household bill. The ATO lets employers and employees use a flat home charging rate per kilometre instead: 5.47 cents per km for the FBT year starting 1 April 2026, up from 4.2 cents per km in earlier years. A driver who does 9,000 km a year charging at home can therefore value the electricity at $492 and have it reimbursed or packaged pre-tax. Commercial charging receipts are only added on top if you can show which share of total charging they represent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which electric cars are FBT exempt in 2026-27?
Battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars first held and used on or after 1 July 2022, provided the price at their first retail sale was below the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles of that year, $91 661 for a car first sold in 2026-27. The car must be used by a current employee or their family. Electric motorbikes and scooters do not qualify.
Does the EV exemption cover charging and insurance?
Yes. Registration, insurance, repairs, maintenance and the electricity to charge the car are exempt car expenses when the car itself is exempt, so they can all go through pre-tax pay. A home wall charger is not a car expense: paid by the employer it is a separate benefit, often a property or expense payment fringe benefit, and may attract FBT.
Can I get the exemption on a second-hand electric car?
Yes, if the car never crossed the luxury car tax line. The value at its first retail sale in Australia must have been under the fuel-efficient threshold of that year, for example $84 916 for 2022-23, and every later sale must also be under the threshold. A car bought new for $85 000 in 2022-23 can never be exempt, whatever it costs now.
Will the electric car exemption end?
It is in the law without an end date, but the government will complete a review of the exemption by mid-2027, looking at electric car take-up. A change would apply from a set date; leases already running are usually protected by transition rules, as happened when plug-in hybrids lost the exemption on 1 April 2025.
Why does my exempt EV show on my income statement?
Because exempt car benefits remain reportable. Your employer reports the grossed-up taxable value, here $23 396 for a $62 000 car. It is not taxed, but it is added to your income for HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, family payments and child support.
